Common Core

Learning Objectives:

What is Common Core?

Background Summary: Common Core is a set standard for students in the United States through grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. Common core is used to prepare students for college and the workforce. There are only two areas covered by the common core: math and English. Common Core is sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

  1. I think that the Common Core is a good idea for a national education basis. However, like so many other attempts at creating and established education and knowledge level, the Common Core is flawed. In terms of the standards, I think that placing any kind of standards on what children should know at a certain age is both difficult and forgetful. This difficult and forgetful aspect is that all children learn at their own speed and acquire knowledge in different ways. As was listed as a con for the Common Core, some of the geographic areas in the United States will have students that test at different levels. Another issue with the Common Core is that even though it is completely adopted and followed by the United States, it will make us an outlier when compared to global testing.
